When you think Acantha Lang…
Think the rock soul of Janis Joplin crossed
with the raw bluesy tone of Tina Turner.
For New Orleans’ born songstress Acantha Lang being told “you have one of the best voices I’ve ever heard” and receiving a standing ovation from one of the world’s most successful and hard to impress music moguls, Simon Cowell, was a dream come true and a testament to the many years of hard work she dedicated to honing her craft.
Acantha’s journey began in a strict single parent home where a Jehovah’s Witness mother raised her. Music or anything outside of bible studies was not allowed. Acantha knew she could sing at a very early age, her lifelong friends still share tales of her voracious singing in the lunchroom, yard, and hallways at school. Her story is not the classic one involving singing in the protective womb of the church choir or being surrounded by a family of musicians. The little southern girl with no musical background never envisioned she would one day perform around the world and make fans out of some of the world’s most celebrated celebrities. Acantha has performed in Africa, French Guiana, China, Russia, and throughout Europe and has been heralded as a force to be reckoned with by luminaries such as Simon Cowell, Sting, Axl Rose, Jude Law, and Billionaire George Soros just to name a few.
Growing up in the rich musical landscape of New Orleans, one would think that Acantha’s musical journey began there, however it wasn’t until she moved to New York City that she found her voice. For the first few years in New York, Acantha was unsure of what career path she was going to take. In 2002, Acantha made the decision to dedicate her life to creating music and performing. She jumped in head first and never looked back. She knew her biggest obstacle would be crushing her stage fright. Her solution to her insecurity was to get on any and every stage that would welcome her. Acantha performed endlessly at every ‘open mic’ in the city week after week for 2 years. Her determination paid off as she not only found her voice, but she also became an uninhibited showman on stage. Acantha possesses a very special stage presence and charisma that attracts attention.
With her newfound confidence, she moved to Harlem in 2004 and began her musical expedition, which psychologically transported her right back to New Orleans. She bought her first Blues CD at a local store in Harlem and immediately felt a connection. She says, “It felt like home”. Acantha immersed herself in the BLUES. She studied the history, the music, and watched countless documentaries about BLUES greats Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Muddy Waters, and many others. At the time, she was dating a restaurateur who had just opened a supper club in Harlem. Her ex-boyfriend decided to showcase Acantha at the club every Monday night. The idea for ‘Monday Night Blues’ in Harlem was born. ‘Monday Night Blues’ quickly became one of the ‘must see’ events in the city. Acantha’s unleashed energy on stage was an amalgamation of Tina Turner, James Brown, and Janis Joplin and the night was chronicled on BET, UPN 9, New York 1 News, Time Out New York, and the prestigious Crain’s Business Journal to name a few. International Jazz and Blues Festivals from ports around the world started booking Acantha to headline their festivals. She was dubbed “the new face of the blues”.
After her stint in Harlem, Acantha would find herself performing at one of the hottest clubs in the country, THE BOX. She recently took over the highly respected position as MC of the BOX show. The experience of being able to perform 5 nights a week in front of an audience which includes an array of A-listers in the fields of music, film, corporate finance, and fashion has fine-tuned her already considerable skills. Night after night, she performs for top names such as John Malkovich, Bono, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Naomi Campbell, Uma Thurman and her dynamic show repeatedly brings the star-studded crowd to their feet.
Now Acantha feels that she is ready for the world to hear the voice that she has worked so hard to develop. She’s decided to launch a YouTube Channel showcasing her putting her own spin on some of the hottest songs on the charts. The first one is a stripped down version of Lil Wayne’s hit song “How to Love” which will blast-off the channel November 8th. She is currently working on others to follow.
Although blues music has had a major impact on Acantha’s sound, she credits that everything she listens to has had an affect on her musical development in some way. Pointing out Tina Turner, Led Zeppelin, Nina Simone, Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger as some of her biggest influences.
